You hold me
captive in your quiet
stares. Your arms
reaching out
though they are
still.
And as words
keep their silence,
I hear
your soul’s oration
and your heart’s
whispers.
I allow a tinge
of smile to
paint itself
on my lips.
The sun
is most
captivating
when in its softest
shades.

Muted sighs your lips refuse to release
Linger in the air, snatching silence’s peace;
But I, looking through the hazy mist,
See only the caricature of what was once
Your beautiful face and, not really seeing it,
I read the thoughts that reside only in my head
Overlooking the warning in the smile
That escapes your tightly pursed lips.
Echoing sounds that your mouth spews
Vibrate in the air, shattering the moment’s quiet;
But I, listening to sound with ears gone deaf
Hear only static noise from what was once
Your melodious voice and, not really listening to it,
I hear only the music playing in my mind
Not noticing the menace in the tone
With which you delivered your piece.
Everything’s silent now, yet peace
Still refuses to return, saying she can’t take
The disrespect she suffered in our hands.
And I wonder what difference that makes;
She was never home and never was she my friend.
She condemned me whenever I smiled at chaos
And scoffed at my attempts to court silence.
No, her refusal to come back does not make
Any difference in my discordant existence.
