Kidem ti sipnget* (Pitch Black)

September 13, 2008 by Juan SP Hidalgo, Jr. filed under Poetry | 532 views

Kidem ti sipnget,
Agan-annadtayo ta derraas
Aminen a bakrang ‘toy dalan.
Sigurado, dagitay gurruod
Riniingdan dagiti bin-i
Ti sabong ti kimat.
Awan, awanen ti pagpilian,
Uray iti mata ti allawig,
No agririnnamasen dagiti oso
Ken agila iti daga ken tangatang.

Pumalso ngata dagiti saltek,
Wenno ballaag dagiti tekka;
Dinto ngata agligsay ti buyon,
Wenno biddut ti sintas?
Naladawen tapno ukraden pay ti Libro
Tapno diskutiren dagiti binatog.
Umayen ti ulo-ulo ti layus:
Ay, asinonto ti agibaklay
Ken agipumpon kalpasan
Ti dakkel a bakal?

Kidem ti sipnget, kakadua,
Ne, agan-annadtayo
Ta derraas aminen
A bakrang ‘toy dalan….

PITCH BLACK*
(Kidem ti Sipnget)

Translated by the Poet

It is pitch black,
Let us be cautious for all is precipice
On both sides of this road.
Certainly, those thunders
Have wakened the seeds
Of lightning flowers.
Nowhere, nowhere else to seek refuge,
Even in the eye of the cyclone,
When the bears and the eagles start to clash
In land and sky.

Can the lizards’ cries be false,
Or the geckos’ warnings;
Will the buyon fall,
Or the sintas wrong?
Too late to open the Book
To debate upon the lines,
The flood-head is coming:
Ay, who will carry
And bury after
The great war?

It is pitch black, my friends,
Come, let us be cautious
For all is precipice on both
Sides of this road….

The truth is that I was the one who posted Apong’s poem. With his permission, of course.
